Bread and Circuses is about celebrating good food. The foundation of
the business is the bakery, where everything is made from scratch
using the best local Manitoba Certified Organic and Winnipeg
Humane Society Certified (WHSC) ingredients that can be found.
Bread & Circuses try to create an atmosphere where you can enjoy
the fare whether you are in a hurry or can stay for a visit.
Here
are five reasons why you should make regular stops at
Bread & Circuses.
1. Bread
& Circuses know the food from the ground up. Owner Tom Janzen's
background is in farming and many of the products are purchased
directly from growers. The Number #1 special is their Big
Top Turkey sandwich. The Winnipeg Humane Society Certified
program has had an Independent Organic Inspector (IOIA) conduct a
thorough inspection of the producers farm. You can enjoy knowing
that the birds qualify under the WHSC program, have access to the
outdoors, are free run and eat and perch at will. Bread &
Circuses approach to hospitality also has a rural bend to it... "Come
as you are. Make yourself at home."
2. The bakers and cooks keep trades alive that
are not as common as they once were. Commitment to their craft and
the transmission of skills are two areas where the employees shine.
3. An exchange that is hard to measure happens
whey you support a local independent business. Thanks for
your part in making our community stronger.
4. Your stomach may be growling.
5. Your bread box is empty.

The
Origins of Bread & Circuses name
Duas tantum rex anxious optat: panem et circenses
Only two things does the Roman citizen worry about: Bread and
Circuses
The oft-quoted phrase "Bread and Circuses" originated in
the book of satires written by Juvenal in Rome in AD 62. Juvenal
chided the Romans for following their whims and pleasures, allowing
their allegiances to be swayed by any politician who would
cater to their appetites.
Two thousand years later, they have chosen their name because it
fits with their philosophy of good food and celebration. They are
committed to a daily ritual of combining great ingredients and
transforming them through their labours into something that sustains
you. At the same time they include a little of the circus to
brighten your day.
